Avalokiteshvara, is the supreme embodiment of compassion and the personification of the bodhisattva ideal. This name means “lord who gazes down at the world.” He is the helper of all sentient beings in the 6 realms (god, jealous god, human, animal, hungry ghost, hell). In Tibet, he is called Chenrezig, and his mantra, OM MANI PADME HUM, is widely repeated by most Tibetans. This main form of Avalokiteshvara is shining white and has 4 arms. His two primary hands hold the jewel of enlightenment that fulfills all wishes. His 2nd right hand holds a crystal rosary, representing the tirelessness of his compassion, and in his left hand is a lotus of purity. The Dalai Lama and Gyalwa Karmapa are said to be his incarnations. He is shown here in the midst of his snow mountain paradise called "Potala" after which the Dalai Lama's palace in Lhasa was named.
